Research interests

1. How cells of different types, but with the same genome, maintain their identities and functions over time involves epigenetic processes. These processes must be tightly regulated to prevent inappropriate cell behavior and function that can lead to human diseases such as cancer and premature aging.

2.     However, despite the recent advances in decoding the human genome, we know very little as to how the epigenetic “memory” of cellular identity and function is maintained. My approach to this question is to study how cells integrate extracellular information, obtained through signaling pathways, and intracellular cues, through nuclear factors, to elicit appropriate epigenetic responses in various biological situations.

3.     Using the genetically tractable in vivo system of Drosophila melanogaster, I plan to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which regulatory networks connecting signal transduction pathways (extrinsic factors) and chromatin factors (intrinsic factors) control epigenetic memory in the context of tumorigenesis, aging, stem cell maintenance, and genome stability.
